Measuring cartridge lengths across the bullet tips is not a reliable
(or repeatable) method for measuring your loaded rounds. It’s common
for variationsof up to .025" (0.6mm) to exist from one round to
the next.
Our Bullet Comparator solves that problem by measuring rounds from
a reliable surface on the bullet– the ogive– to provide consistent,
precise measurementsof your rounds. The Bullet Comparator is also
used to check uniformity of bullets from base to ogive. Optional
Anvil Base (Item No. AB1) attaches to the caliper blade for this
purpose.
Our Bullet Comparator easily attaches to the blade of your caliper
with a thumbscrew and uses interchangeable insert bushings to measure

Hornady O.A.L Gauge and Modified Cases |
Hornady
O.A.L. Gauge is a precise bullet seating depth: one of the best-kept
secrets to accurate reloading. Precisely regulating the bullet
seating depth and the resulting "jump" to the rifling is widely
regarded as fundamental to improved accuracy. A few thousandths
of an inch change between the bullet and the rifling can make
the difference between just so-so accuracy and real tack-driver
performance. Hornady OAL Gauge is universally acclaimed as the
most accurate, easy-to-use, and reliable method of obtaining that
critical relationship.
To use Hornady OAL Gauge you will need to purchase a Hornady Modified
Case to fit your firearm's chamber and thread it onto the Gauge.
Hornady offers interchangeable Modified Cases in all common sizes
from .17 Remington up to and including .45 Government. These specially
prepared Hornady Modified Cases are threaded at the case-head
and have a .002" oversized neck to accept the same bullets you
intend to load. This is critical – as the Hornady OAL Gauge dimensions
obtained will be accurate to .001". Results such as this cannot
be attained with competitive products which use a simulated bullet
with an arbitrary shape.
Small changes in the clearance between the bullet and the rifling
can make a big difference in accuracy. Most often, seating bullets
close to the rifling will produce improved accuracy.
The O.A.L (over0all length) Guage produces an accurate model of
your chamber with the bullet in light contact with the lands of
the rifling. The result is then measured with your caliper, allowing
easy transfer of this critical dimension to the bullet seating
die.
This allows you to precisely regulate the bullet's clearance (free
travel) to the lands: typically .020" to .040" for hunting
rounds. The O.A.L Gauge works with any bullet you choose. Eliminates
guess work. Monitors throat erosion. No other method "measures
up" to the reliability and precision of this easy to use
tool. Modified Case (required, see below) permits Gauge use with
any chamber. Two-Gauge models fil all action types (except Win
